John and Colette Hoff are co-founders of the American Association for the Furtherance of Community, which sponsors the Goodenough Community and its programs,  as a long term experiment in community formation.

John L Hoff, ThD

John is a professional educator and trainer, counselor, clergyman, and organizational consultant who demonstrates from his life the benefit of compassionate behavior and relationship. He is a social activist for whom creating community as an environment for growing “good people” has been his life’s work.

Living for seven years as a boy with Native Americans in the Yukon bush was a life-changing experience that enabled him to recognize that consciously shaping culture is part of what makes a community a good “medium” for individual growth. He received his Th.D. in counseling from the Pacific School of Religion, Graduate Union of Theology and Philosophy, Berkeley, CA; was ordained in the United Church of Christ and has served churches in the Midwest, California, and Washington; did post-graduate work in community psychiatry at the University of Washington in Seattle and was trained in community business development by the National Training Laboratory (NTL Institute, Washington DC).  Dr. Hoff has directed several human service organizations, and since 1981, has been Executive Director of the Goodenough Community System.

Colette Hoff, MEd

Prior to earning her Master’s degree from the University of Puget Sound and the Christian Counseling Service, Colette spent 10 years providing nutritional counseling and motivational workshops for the Northwest Lipid Research Clinic.

As a counselor and teacher, Colette has extensive experience in adult and family education and in the use of community as a method for human growth and development. She has a special vocation for working with women and women’s spirituality and was ordained as a pastor by Convocation: A Church and Ministry.

Colette is also the manager of the Sahale Learning Center.
